 Director of Religious Education 

Vibrant mid-sized Unitarian Universalist church in Portland, Maine is looking for a 30 hours/per week Director of Religious Education starting August 15, 2016. Our ideal candidate will be passionate about creating community and growth for parents and families. A primary focus of the position will be training, support and recruitment of volunteer group leaders for our Sunday religious education program.

We are looking for an enthusiastic professional who is self-motivated, has excellent communication skills, displays obvious love for children and youth, and has an understanding of and commitment to UU principles of education and shared ministry. The right person will be comfortable with electronic communication and database applications.

We prefer a candidate with some combination of the following:

  • Experience leading a UU Religious Education program
  • Educational degree or experience in Child Development and/or Education
  • Other comparable work with children and youth
  • Experience in project management and volunteer coordination


Job Description:

The Director of Religious Education will offer leadership, support, and oversight to our Sunday religious education programs for preschool through senior high youth, and supervise our paid nursery care providers. She or he will provide support for our volunteer group leaders, attention to the families and children of our religious community, and welcome and orientation to new families. She or he will work with the minister to include children in worship, and create opportunities for multigenerational worship and community building. During 2015-16, our RE enrollment was 84 children and youth, with an average attendance of 34.  We have 245 adult members.

We have two Sunday services. At 9 a.m., there is a full religious education program with age appropriate curricula. You can find out more about our program at our website. At 11 a.m., there is nursery care. We also have periodic Our Whole Lives (sexuality/relationship) education for our Junior Youth, and service projects for Senior & Junior Youth. Our departing DRE will be working to set up the program for the 2016-17 year, so that the transition might be a smooth one. We have a strong Religious Education Committee and many active volunteers. 

Other duties:

Maintain RE program records, oversee RE budget, work with RE committee in regard to curricula, planning family oriented events. 


The DRE reports to and works in close collaboration with the Minister, Rev. Myke Johnson.


Negotiable depending on experience, from $27,000 to $30,000. We follow UUA fair compensation guidelines. This is a full year position at 30 hours per week with one month's paid vacation. There will be some weeks with more than 30 hours and others with less, based on the programs and projects of that week. Benefits include 10% retirement for UUA eligible employees, disability and life insurance, 60% of individual health insurance premiums with the UUA plan, and professional expenses of $1200.

 Weekly Childcare on Sunday mornings 

RE has 2 openings for Sunday morning, weekly childcare for 2016-17 Church Year!!! 
There is a 9 am & 11 am morning service, so the Sunday hours are 8:45 am- 12 pm starting September 11, 2016- June 19, 2017.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
To be attentive with ages from baby thru 4 years old.
Problem solve, keeping children engaged by creating a playful and safe atmosphere so their parents can attend church
Light paperwork thru spreadsheet data entry each week (5-10 mins.)
Job Skills:
Must have CPR/First Aid for baby thru adult or ability to attain certifications for hire.
Ability to be flexible as attendance numbers could be from 1 child to 8 the next week
Must have past childcare/baby sitting experience
Pay rate is $30.30 per week.
