Allen Avenue UU Church has made a pledge to support other organizations in our community by sharing our cash collection from Sunday services. Each week, we share one half of our collection with a nonprofit organization that has a local connection to our community. As well we educate ourselves about the organizations and some members become involved in the work of these groups.

As a consequence of this endeavor, we hope that Allen Avenue and Unitarian Universalism will have a greater impact on the community and the community will have a greater awareness of our church and our faith in action.

Throughout the church year 2009-2010 we will share with

  • September 2009 – Preble Street-Youth and Family Outreach Program
  • October 2009 – Equality Maine
  • November 2009 – Wayside Soup Kitchen
  • December 2009 – Minister’s Discretionary Fund
  • January 2010 – Greater Portland Amnesty International Group #705
  • February 2010 – UUSC Haiti Relief Fund
  • March 2010 – GLSEN
  • April 2010 – Abyssinian Meeting House
  • May 2010 – Center for Grieving Children (chosen by the A2U2 Youth Group)
  • June 2010 – Physicians for Social Responsibility, Maine chapter
  • July/August 2010 – Habitat for Humanity, Portland Chapter

As of January 2010 our congregation has shared $29,000.00 over a 3 1/2year period with numerous worthy organizations involved in social justice work.
