I am still uplifted from a wonderful weekend of community with you. We wrapped up the Prophets’ Journey sermon series on Sunday morning and had a beautiful and moving multifaith MLK celebration (and even got some press). A shoutout to three of our members who, as part of the Sea Change Chorale, sang so beautifully on Sunday afternoon- Carol Jenkins, Audrey Williams, and Janet Heroux. It’s a special gift when we can collaborate and come together with other people of faith across denominations, remembering the larger community of justice-seekers and good souls of which we are a part.
Many of my clergy colleagues are answering the call to show up today and tomorrow in Minneapolis in support of the resistance against ICE there. My discernment about traveling to MN led me to a deeper commitment to stay here in Portland this week, as my body and organizing can be of use resisting ICE in our own local community. All of our efforts matter.
There are a few opportunities to plug into community coming up this weekend, both to resist and to get support. Many will gather at Kennedy Park in Lewiston on Saturday for a peaceful protest and march against the presence of ICE in Maine and in support of our immigrant neighbors. I’ll be there with other local ministers and hope to see some of you! There has been ICE activity this week–even just within a half mile of our church–and amidst the fear and distress that causes, so many folks have been showing up through work on the hotline, as verifiers, and as witnesses. This gives me hope in such troubled times.
On Saturday night at A2U2 those of us falling in the Gen X/Millenial/Gen Z age groups will gather for a potluck to connect and deepen relationships with one another (sign up is here). Childcare is provided and we always enjoy this laid back opportunity to be together. On Sunday morning your Worship Committee will lead the service, reflecting on “Reasons to Get Up in the Morning.”
I will be out of the office all next week attending the UU Ministers Association Institute for the Learning Ministry in Albuquerque, New Mexico. I’ve signed up for a 9hr learning track called “Preaching with Power.” I look forward to this opportunity to connect with my colleagues, support one another, and to deepen my learning… then bring it back and put it into practice! There will be no “Between Sundays” next week but I will be home in time to lead our all-ages Imbolc service with Emily on February 1st.
Until we’re back together, may you stay safe and be well.
I am holding each of you in the light.
