What we belong to
We are Unitarian Universalists, a member congregation of the Unitarian Universalist Association (UUA) – and we hold a few wider commitments and networks in addition.
The Unitarian Universalist Association
The UUA gathers more than a thousand Unitarian Universalist congregations across the country and internationally. Each one governs itself; together we send delegates to the General Assembly each summer and decide what we hold in common.
A Welcoming Congregation
A Welcoming Congregation since 2003: the UUA’s designation for congregations that take up the full inclusion of people of all sexual orientations and gender identities. We helped defeat a 2005 referendum that would have stripped rights from gay, lesbian, and transgender people in Maine, and in 2008 were the first congregation in the state to support the freedom of same-sex couples to marry.
A Green Sanctuary
A Green Sanctuary since 1993, the UUA’s program for congregations taking up the care of the earth, organized today around climate justice. In 2001, members learned of plans for condominiums on the land adjoining our building; the church bought the wooded wetland, expanding the land we steward to 6.5 acres. In 2025, our property was designated a Certified Wildlife Habitat by the National Wildlife Federation. Today we work to align our community practices with our commitment to environmental justice, join in the UUA’s Climate Justice Revivals, take part in programming with the BTS Center, and host a monthly Climate Café.
MUUSAN, the Maine UU State Advocacy Network
Beyond the Association, we help carry MUUSAN, the legislative ministry that links Maine’s Unitarian Universalist congregations. We helped found it in 2013; today it brings UU voices to the State House on the environment, democracy, healthcare, and racial, Native, and immigrant justice, alongside partners like the Maine Council of Churches and the League of Women Voters.
